We use evidence-based, compassionate practice and tailor treatment to each client’s unique needs.

Harney & Associates is a small, female-owned group practice focused on providing expert, specialized treatment. We take pride in our work, are eager to hone and enhance our skills, and enjoy the company and collaboration of each other as colleagues. Take time to explore our areas of expertise, the clients we typically serve, and the evidence-based treatment modalities we use as the foundation of our therapeutic work. We are making a few edits to this page, thanks for your patience!

Our Expertise

  • We understand that eating disorders are deeply emotional disorders - food and body are the tip of the iceberg. We help clients understand the root of their disorder as well as the thoughts and actions that maintain a heartbreaking, difficult cycle of disordered eating and body dissatisfaction. We explore the benefits of recovery as well as process the loss of the eating disorder itself. Our goal is to develop collaborative, robust paths toward recovery. Our providers have rich training in empirically-supported approaches to the treatment of eating disorders and we tailor this strong foundation to the unique needs of each client. We have expertise treating anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. We hold membership with the Academy for Eating Disorders, a leading organization that supports research and clinical advancement in eating disorders.

  • Many of our clients feel insecure about the reflection they see in the mirror. They may feel betrayed or dismayed by their body. We understand the depth of grief, sadness, anger, anxiety that manifests when one is at such odds with their appearance. Our clinicians are well-equipped to explore the emotions and actions that coexist with body dissatisfaction and find alternative approaches to self and body.

  • We have specific training and experience working with those enduring infertility or challenges conceiving. We understand the grief, loss, heartbreak, frustration, and anxiety that often coincide with trying to conceive. Our work is compassionate, collaborative, and allows space for both loss and hope. We are members of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the gold standard organization that promotes research, support, and understanding of infertility.

  • Anxiety and fear often diminish your sense of self, worth, and social experience. Anxiety lives in many forms including panic attacks, social anxiety, obsessive/compulsive traits, and ‘sweating the small stuff.’ You may find yourself catastrophizing and fearing the worst in many different situations. We help clients better understand the roots of their anxieties and find ways to gently approach what they may have been (understandably) avoiding. Our goal is to create a larger, richer, more robust world for clients.

  • We understand how traumatic events lead to lasting emotional responses that may influence a person’s relationships, daily living, and general feelings of safety, wellness, and power. Our clinicians help clients find their grounded center and process the impact of traumatic events.

  • Welcoming a child into your home may feel surprisingly challenging, foreign, guilt-laden, or overwhelming. We are well-versed in processing, understanding, and developing strategies to complement your ever-evolving role as a parent.

  • We know this is a broad category and we’re here for it. Whether you recently moved to Richmond, started college, embarked upon a new career path, entered a caretaking role with your aging parents, had a baby (or that baby turned into a teenager, for that matter) we understand that your life continues to evolve and take shape in unexpected or overwhelming ways at times.

  • Harney & Associates is a small, female-owned practice that specializes in eating disorders, body image, and infertility - issues that speak strongly to the female experience. We love exploring topics of identity, femininity, values, and how these values evolve and change as we allow new wisdom and experience to enter our self narratives.

  • Yep, we treat men too! Many men come to us with concerns directly related to our areas of expertise such as anxiety, depression, eating or body concerns, or the often overwhelming experience of becoming a father.

  • We know how tricky it can be for therapists to find good therapists for themselves. You may already have plenty of skills and insight - but here you can unburden yourself and be fully present as a client, not a therapist. We provide deep, empathic listening and ask good questions.

Our Approach

  • Compassion is a cornerstone of our practice - we believe in a collaborative understanding, kindness, and non-judgemental approach.

  • CBT allows for deeper introspection and understanding of one’s own internal thoughts and narrative, emotional responses, and actions. We will highlight how these internal and external experiences influence our present day-to-day lives and reflect on how our beliefs and assumptions about ourselves and the world came to be.

  • ACT underscores the importance of our values, being present, and being engaged in meaningful actions as the foundation of overall well-being.

  • DBT promotes mindful, intentional action and decision-making. It hosts a wide variety of skills and techniques to enhance our ability to regulate emotions, interact with others, and tolerate distress.

Our Clients

  • Therapy is an opportunity to examine your experiences with a supportive expert who has a helpful perspective. Together, you and your provider will better understand your concerns, resolve problems, and develop tools to tackle areas that may have previously stumped you. Individual therapy sessions are typically weekly or biweekly, 45-50 minutes.

  • Many adolescents appreciate the therapeutic space - an opportunity to talk to an expert about their day-to-day lives and explore themes that impact their emotions and decision-making. When working with adolescents we incorporate and align with the needs of the family as much as possible. We believe parents and other loved ones are the most powerful resource when it comes to an adolescent’s emotional well-being.

  • Couples therapy promotes enhanced connection, communication, and understanding between partners in a relationship. Couple therapy sessions are typically weekly or biweekly. Our providers incorporate backgrounds in Emotion Focused Therapy and Gottman Method when working with couples.

  • A number of our clinicians have intensive experience supervising clinicians at all training levels. Our combined academic and clinical expertise lends itself well to a supportive, inclusive, compelling training environment. We value guiding burgeoning therapists through the complexities and joys of providing therapeutic services.

Insurance and fees

Insurance

Harney & Associates uses a self-pay model and we are considered out of network with your insurance provider. We provide electronic paperwork to clients at the end of each month that they can submit to their insurance provider for possible reimbursement (commonly referred to as ‘Superbills’). Please check with your insurance provider in advance about deductibles and reimbursement rates. Please do not hesitate to ask me questions about this process.

Note: Medicaid and Medicare are not able to reimburse out of network providers. If you have Medicaid or Medicare you will not be able to submit a Superbill for reimbursement.

Questions to ask your insurance provider:

  • Do I have mental health insurance benefits?

  • What is my out of network mental health benefit reimbursement rate (CPT code: 90834)?

  • Do I have an out of network deductible and has it been met?

Fees

  • Intake Session: $250

  • Individual Therapy (typical): 45-50 min; $195

  • Individual Therapy (extended): 75 min; $225

  • Individual Therapy (shortened): 30 min: $155

  • Family or Couple Therapy: 45-60 min: $225

Cancellation policy

In order to both organize our practice and guarantee clients regular times, we typically schedule a single weekly (or biweekly) time slot for a client. If you do not show up for your scheduled therapy appointment, and you have not notified me at least 24 hours in advance, you will be required to pay the full cost of the session. Missed sessions are not billable to insurance.

GOOD FAITH ESTIMATE

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.

  • You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes  related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.

  • Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least one business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose     for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.

  • If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.

  • Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call Meg at (319) 541-7500.
